Modern Day Patrick Bateman for President

“The Dems/Progressives might need a sociopath.” – Twitter user @iamMelsmith

In the wake of a disastrous election night for the Democratic Party, one question has floated around: who will emerge as the party’s presidential nominee in 2028? People are speculating that Kamala Harris is not likely to run again, as many believe that a large population of the country still isn’t ready for a woman to be president. One prediction is that Governor Gavin Newsom of California may become the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. Given Newsom’s political experience, progressive credentials, and ability to attract national attention, he is viewed as a strong candidate for the next presidency. His appeal, in particular, may lie in his ability to play to different voter segments, including younger progressives and even those within the “sigma male” demographic which has traditionally appealed to figures like Donald Trump. Newsom’s striking resemblance to the character Patrick Bateman from American Psycho has even sparked conversation on social media, with some speculating playing on it could be an intentional strategy to appeal to disillusioned male voters who crave a figure of boldness and confidence.

Early Political Career and Rise to Power

Newsom’s trajectory to political prominence began in the late 1990s and early 2000s in San Francisco where he served as the city’s mayor from 2004–2011. He made headlines early in his term with progressive policies, most notably when he authorized the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004, a decision that sparked both national praise and controversy. The early decision to champion progressive values, embrace LGBTQ+ rights, and advocate for social justice issues, like health care and the support of unions, became a hallmark of his political brand.

After serving as mayor, Newsom was elected California’s lieutenant governor in 2010 where he continued to advance progressive policies. Newsom led efforts to increase funding for higher education, advocating for affordable access to universities and community colleges. He was a vocal supporter of the California Dream Act which provided in-state tuition to undocumented students. On the issue of LGBTQ+ rights, Newsom remained a staunch advocate, working to ensure protections for transgender individuals and advancing policies aimed at combating discrimination.

Governor of California: A Platform for National Politics

His eight-year stint in that role was followed by his election as governor in 2018. Under his leadership, California has implemented ambitious climate change policies, including one of the nation’s most aggressive goals for achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. He has also pushed forward with policies to address homelessness, healthcare reform, and public education. Newsom has used the power of California’s large economy and population to set an example for the nation, positioning himself as a leader with the vision and political acumen necessary to tackle America’s biggest issues. In highlighting his pride in the state, he has uttered the phrase “the nation of california” more than once.

One of Newsom’s defining moments as governor came during the COVID-19 pandemic. His early and decisive actions to close businesses, mandate mask-wearing, and implement lockdowns set him apart as a leader who prioritized public health, even when it cost political capital. Though some criticized him for executive overreach and acting too cautiously, others lauded him for taking swift and necessary action to protect Californians, putting him on the national stage.

Newsom also gained attention for his role in battling Republican-led states over issues like abortion rights and gun laws. California has positioned itself as a sanctuary for women seeking reproductive healthcare services in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. Furthermore, Newsom’s outspoken support for a ban on assault weapons, comprehensive background checks for all gun sales, “red flag” laws, and restrictions on high-capacity magazines and ghost guns has actuated his support among advocates for stricter gun laws. He appears frequently on Fox News where he has voluntarily debated political figures and pundits. Most memorable was his debate against Florida Governor DeSantis which CNN said was a “window into an alternative political universe; one in which President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were not on course for a 2024 rematch of the 2020 presidential race.” He staunchly defended Biden’s policies and eagerly called Desantis a bully.

Newsom as the “Modern-Day Patrick Bateman”

Trump’s rise to power in 2016 was partly driven by his ability to craft a persona that defied traditional political norms. His appeal wasn’t based on emotional empathy or in-depth policy discussions, but on his image as a bold, unapologetic outsider willing to break from the establishment. Trump’s persona as a “winner” — someone who embodied success, confidence, and ruthlessness — resonated with a significant portion of the electorate, particularly those disillusioned with the political elite. He projected an image of being in control, unafraid to speak his mind even at the expense of conventional political wisdom.

A similar quality of calculated self-presentation is seen in Gavin Newsom’s public persona. While not actually a sociopath, Newsom has carefully crafted an image that mirrors elements of Trump’s appeal, especially for voters who value control, competence, and boldness over emotional or idealistic considerations. Newsom has even been compared to Patrick Bateman, the iconic character from “American Psycho.” Like Bateman, he embodies the slick, calculated image of power often associated with the “sigma male” archetype — someone who operates outside conventional norms but commands respect and influence through drive and ambition.

This likeness to Bateman isn’t merely superficial. It reflects Newsom’s ability to project success, confidence, and detachment. His sharp suits, well-groomed appearance, and commanding charisma give him a deliberate, controlled presence. While Bateman’s coldness stems from sociopathy, Newsom’s cultivation of his public image taps into a similar appeal, commanding respect through calculated charm and presenting himself as calm, cool, and collected.

For some voters — especially those drawn to figures like Trump for their perceived authenticity and ruthless drive — Newsom’s polished, “sigma-like” persona may be exactly what they’re looking for. His public image suggests a leader focused on results, not bogged down by political respectability or emotional appeal, making him a strong figure for those who prioritize power and competence above all else.

Newsom as the 2028 Democratic Frontrunner

While Newsom’s political ascent has been impressive, his potential 2028 Election stint may very well be influenced by the shortcomings of Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election. Many speculate that Harris, who was the Democratic nominee for the 2024 Election, may struggle to secure the nomination in 2028 or even be encouraged to run.

If other Democratic candidates fail to secure the nomination in 2028, Newsom could be well-positioned to become the Democratic frontrunner. He has already built a strong national profile and his progressive policies align with the priorities of many Democratic voters, targeting those in key swing states. His success in California, the nation’s most populous and diverse state, would serve as a powerful asset in a general election in securing electoral votes.

One of Newsom’s greatest strengths is his ability to appeal to a broad coalition of voters. While he is undoubtedly popular with the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, he also has a track record of pragmatic and passionate governance, potentially making him appealing to moderates and independents. His focus on issues like climate change, healthcare, and housing has made him a favorite among the youth, while his willingness to engage in tough political fights — such as defending California’s sanctuary policies — has earned him the respect of more established Democrats.

However, it’s his ability to craft and maintain his personal brand that could truly propel him to the top. Much like Bateman, Newsom’s cool, calculated image is designed to appeal to a certain type of voter. His ability to exude power, confidence, and a certain ruthlessness may endear him to those who see in him a leader who is unafraid to make difficult decisions and who is ultimately more focused on winning than on appeasing critics. For voters who value a leader who projects control, ambition, and success, Newsom could be the ideal candidate.

The Road to the White House

Despite his advantages, Newsom’s path to the Democratic nomination in 2028 will not be without challenges. Potential contenders include Senator Elizabeth Warren, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and perhaps even figures from outside the traditional political establishment. Some fear his policies may even be “too progressive” to attract more moderate voters. Additionally, Newsom has faced sharp criticism over his handling of the ever-increasing homeless population in California and his disregard for their situation.

However, Newsom’s mix of progressive vision, political experience, and ability to connect with voters on issues like climate change and social justice position him as one of the strongest contenders. Not one day after Trump was elected president, Newsom called for a special legislative session to protect individual liberties in the face of the incoming Trump administration.

Gavin Newsom’s rise in California politics with his growing national profile make him a leading figure in the Democratic Party’s future. With the possibility that Kamala Harris may struggle to secure the nomination in 2028, Newsom could emerge as the party’s most viable presidential candidate. His progressive agenda, political charisma, and experience as governor of the nation’s largest state put him in an enviable position to compete for the presidency in 2028. While the road ahead remains uncertain, Gavin Newsom’s trajectory suggests that he will be a major player in shaping the direction of the Democratic Party in the years to come. After all, he is the Democratic party’s very own “sociopath.”
